Fugadà

Runningfrom

I roam narrow, dark and mysterious streets
There's nobody around, some stars in the whimsical night
Away from the reek
Away from the reek

Running away from my previous record
From those who say: "I feel you", but they're lying
From the hair I'm growing, ecce rapper 1
I'm sorry, I prefer waxing
I run away from my cells, Montecristo 2
In the rush I wound myself, splinters and bandages
Don't answer the phone, Chi l'ha visto? 3
Are you looking for geniuses? I suggest Mendel 4
Psycho among people, fixed
Not like Alfred Hitchcock's shower curtains 5
But roaming in the fog, in the snow
In the desert like Christ from Betlehem
I'm running away, you call me like you do with a lift
(Like a lift, like a lift)
I can't hear you, I'm running fast like Flash and Sonic
I'm looking for peace, sorry
I hear the tolls here for my time has come
In the woods I run my marathon
Awake by night like a prostitute
Remo Remotti, away from my mom Rome 6
Running from

Running from, running from, running from
I run away from the storefront of a gala
I don't need a map, you can smoke it 7
I'm running from
Running from, running from, running from
Smoke rises from the pyre, ooh la la
Enjoy my ruin, Yucatán 8
I'm running from

From other people's business, barefoot, McCartney 9
With Fugazi on the speaker, I run away 10
From the wood planks of the stages, with a burglar's stride
When the alarm goes off
Like in front of those who aim their gun
Breakneck speed, so still
Sirens wailing I don't understand 11
I run at 20 mph, 12not a coward nor a chicken
Because only those who don't risk never leave their home
I run away like a father of a family
But I do it for my son
So that he'll become a good artist
I leave everything, I'm dying, I retreat, Caporetto and Waterloo 13
Reeking like when in retreat I dive my head into the toilet water, oh 14

I'm running from
Running from, running from, running from
I run away from the storefront of a gala
I don't need a map, you can smoke it 7
I'm running from
Running from, running from, running from
Smoke rises from the pyre, ooh la la
Enjoy my ruin, Yucatán 8
I'm running from
Running from, running from, running from
I run away from the storefront of a gala
I don't need a map, you can smoke it 7
I'm running from

Running from, running from, running from
Smoke rises from the pyre, ooh la la
Enjoy my ruin, Yucatán 8
I'm running from
Running from my recurring dream
I run half naked, myth Hermes
Running away like the stars of the West
I'm preyed on by ghosts like Macbeth 15
Running from friends, from groups
I prepare my luggage, you prepare Kleenexs
You don't have to comfort me, it's not my goal
Because I want to be isolated, like Fidel 16
My body is still, as if it was aching
I'll take up dancing, as if Matisse 17
Sanremo lights, my true eclypse 18
I run away from '97, 19 Jena Plissken 20
Come, scavenge
My coffin that you now see smoking
Read the note here in the opening
"I hope the afterlife has a way out"

I'm running from
Running from, running from, running from
I run away from the storefront of a gala
I don't need a map, you can smoke it 7
I'm running from
Running from, running from, running from
Smoke rises from the pyre, ooh la la
Enjoy my ruin, Yucatán 8
I'm running from
Running from, running from, running from

I'm running from
Running from, running from, running from

I'm running from
  • 1. Modification of a phrase from the Bible, "ecce homo" (=here is the man), announcing the arrival of Jesus. Here it's changed to "here comes the rapper"
  • 2. Reference to the novel "The Count of Montecristo" by Dumas, whose main character is unjustly imprisoned
  • 3. Chi l'ha visto? Is an Italian tv program that helps people find friends or family members that have disappeared or are nowhere to be found
  • 4. Mendel was one of the first ever genetists. The pun here relies on the double meaning of "geni": either geniuses, or genes
  • 5. In Hitchcock's famous movie "Psycho", there's a famous scene where a woman is killed in her shower
  • 6. Remo Remotti was an artist, who wrote the monologue "Addio mamma Roma" (=goodbye mommy Rome)
  • 7. a. b. c. d. e. In Italian "cartina" can both mean map and cigarette paper
  • 8. a. b. c. d. e. In Yucatán there are ruins of cities and temples built by pre-columbian civilisations
  • 9. Paul McCartney is the only member of the Beatles crossing the stret barefoot on the cover of the album "Abbey Road"
  • 10. Fugazi are a punk band. There's a pun in Italian between "fugazi" and "fuggo" (=I escape)
  • 11. In Italian "spiegate" means wailing in this case, but it often means "explained", hence the wordplay with understanding
  • 12. There's a wordplay with 20 mph (Venti miglia) and the name of the Italian city Ventimiglia. So the phrase can alternatively sound like "I go to ventimiglia"
  • 13. Caporetto was a military defeat for Italy in the first world war, while in the the Waterloo battle Napoleon was defeated.
  • 14. In Italian this phrase has many assonances with the previous one. I tried to keep as many as possible without distorting the meaning but it's nowhere near how it should be
  • 15. The main character of the play Macbeth kills a rival that could've become king instead of him, and starts having hallucinations and seeing ghosts after committing the crime
  • 16. Referring to the Cuban Fidel Castro. Cuba has been economically isolated for years by other countries as a form of retaliation against its communist regime
  • 17. "The Dance" is a painting by Henri Matisse. In Italian there's another wordplay: Matisse has an ending in -isse, sounding like the verb tense that would have been used in a phrase like that
  • 18. The Sanremo festival is an important musical competition in Italy. When he was young, and before starting his Caparezza project, he had tried to participate, but didn't get good results and he felt humiliated
  • 19. Caparezza participated in the Sanremo festival in 1997
  • 20. Jena Plissken is the main character of the movie "Escape from New York", which takes place in 1997
