The Causer

The cause, if one is to burn,1
You are the causer.
You are the cause for the creation of this world.

In this drunken state I refined/purified myself.2
I called to you, Oh God.
From what I have seen in these passing times,
What nights, Oh God, I called out "God".
I placed my prostrating head upon your soil.
I called to you, Oh God.

That you do not take the purity of my heart from me,
In the path of love that you have, Oh God.
What have I done?3

The cause, if one is to burn,
You are the causer.
You are the cause for the creation of this world.
Of the hand that comes to take mine,
You are my shade of security.

In this drunken state I refined/purified myself.
I called to you, Oh God.
From what I have seen in these passing times,
What nights, Oh God, I called out "God".
I placed my prostrating head upon your soil.
I called to you, Oh God.

  • 1. Burning here is a symbol of asceticism. When Sufi scholars thought one had transcended to a closer state with God, they would call them “burnt.”
  • 2. A lot of the times in Persian poetry, being "drunk" is associated specifically with being impassioned with prayer/faith in God.
  • 3. From "che-ha karde-am," could either be "What [things] have I done?" or "What 'Ah's I have sighed," as "Ah" is used many times to representing sighing.

God bless you armonmashayekh. What a beautiful translation. I have used the Internet for 30-years - and this is my first ever comment to anything! That's how profound your translated words of this song are (for me). Your words compelled me to comment. God bless you Armon. May the Causer bless you. Thank you Armon 🙏🏽 Keep up the great work my brother 🌹🫀.
