Original lyrics
Translation
Das graue Alter
An den Schläfen bin ich grau schon,
Und das Haar es wurde weiß mir,
Es ist hin die holde Jugend,
Und die Zähne sind gealtert.
Es verbleibt wenig Zeit noch
Von dem süßen Leben übrig,
Und in Tränen brech ich oft aus,
Vor dem Tartaros geängstigt.
Denn im Aides ist schreckbar
der Versteck, und schwer dahin auch
Ist die Straße: wer hinabging,
Ist gewiss des Nichtheraufgehns.

Tristana's note:
Translators (and readers) should be aware that the existing title was chosen solely for practical reasons and is not by any means the official title of the poem. Anacreon's fragments/poems are typically accompanied by a combination of numbering and abbreviation instead of a title. The combination of these data indicates the source of the text (usually a very well-known anthology or collection) and it consequently depends on the arrangement of that source. Hence, there are several variations available for each fragment/poem. Should you decide to submit an official translation for the present poem, please make sure to maintain the original title given by its author.
