Crossing the Bar

Sunset and evening star,

And one clear call for me!

And may there be no moaning of the bar,

When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,

Too full for sound and foam,

When that which drew from out the boundless deep

Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,

And after that the dark!

And may there be no sadness of farewell,

When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place

The flood may bear me far,

I hope to see my Pilot face to face

When I have crost the bar.

Translation

Überquerung der Sandbank

Die Sonne geht unter, der Abendstern

und ein deutlicher Ruf für mich!

Und sei auf der Sandbank* kein Stöhnen zu hör'n,

wenn zum Meer ausfahre ich,

doch solch eine Tide, die schläfrig kommt,

zu mächtig für Schall und Schaum,

wenn, was aus grenzloser Tiefe kommt,

zurückkehrt nach daheim.

Zwielicht und Abendläuten

und danach nur die dunkle See!

Und sei keiner traurig von meinen Leuten,

wenn an Bord ich geh;

Kann auch die Flut weit mit mir gehn,

über Grenzen von Zeit und Ort in die Meere,

so hoff ich, meinen Lotsen persönlich zu sehn,

wenn ich die Sandbank quere.

*Sandbank, englisch 'bar', ist in Flusshäfen ein sich ständig verlagerndes Flusssediment vor der Mündung ins (bremsende) Meer. Lotsen müssen den Schiffen helfen.
Alfred Lord Tennyson ( 1809 - 1892) schrieb dieses Gedicht drei Jahre vor seinem Tod. Er empfahl, bei Ausgaben seiner Gedichte dieses Gedicht an letzter Stelle zu plazieren.
