Flor del Río*
One dreary and raining morning
I met a young girl,
appearing lovely from her window,
like a rose in my garden.
"What's your name, lovely brunette?"
I asked her with all of my heart:
what a lovely face you have,
your hair is lovely— let me see".
"I am Mexican, I live with my parents1,
when you talk to them, I will love you then.2
I am Flor del Río, del Río is my last name
because my first name is Flor".
We were happy for five months,
I kissed her so many times,
but one night when I went looking for her,
to my dismay, I couldn't find her.
It was near the village that I heard
that she died from a weak heart,
she was buried there in the orchard
that belongs to the Church of the Assumption.
Now I understand that my darling
was Flor del Río, a beautiful dream
her memory is a source of suffering
It has wounded my heart.
