Harmkvæði
Harma mjǫk mik sína
oð mína inst au kvel
met kvoki kveð ek vina
hittask þau í Hel
Otl er ekki úti von
þó ek sirki minn son
drengr fell blóði vatlar
han skal rata til Valhalar
døtr kvert vilt þú rata
þú sem alt gast gert
græt ek þik ok glata
ekki er lífsins vert
ástin mín fór frá mér
þú ek sirki mest
mundu at ek an þer
engum varst þú flest

Translation
Mourning Poem
I mourn greatly my sorrow
my innermost torment aches my heart
I part with my dear ones
to meet with them in Hel1
I remain with hope
though I am missing my son
the boy fallen in blood
he shall find his way to Valhalla
my daughters, would you guide them
you through whom all can be done
I cry for you and I am lost
life is not worth living
my love leaves me
I search for you most
do remember that I love you
no one was like you
- 1. Helheim, as in the realm of the dead in Norse mythology
