The Last Hope

Under his nose, he had a black moustache.
He was giving out cognacs.
He was hoping to get some small change.1
This begging look...
He would like to escape from here.
He was running
and all he had
was a delicious tipple in his pocket
and one direction
to fly where the bird flies
and he sang to himself:

"All I have,
all I have
is this hope that life will glue me together.
Today I'm leaving alone,
today I'm leaving alone.
I won't turn back.
I'll abandon it all today.
I'm making myself a promise, escaping.
I'm fed up with destiny.
Why would I stall and wait
when nothing changes.
My mum used to say that
hope dies last."

A beautiful flower in her hair was quivering
with fear that she'll replace it
when it stops glistening
so it was flexing like a cat.
When she fixed her eyes on the mirror,
a shot.
She liked hitting the place
where the river flows out,
this burgundy river
but she made a mistake.
Too many hearts to the stake.2

All I have,
all I have
is this hope that life will glue me together.
Today I'm leaving alone,
today I'm leaving alone.
I won't turn back.
I'll abandon it all today.
I'm making myself a promise, escaping.
I'm fed up with destiny.
Why would I stall and wait
when nothing changes.
My mum used to say that
hope dies last.
