Bastogne lyrics

Standing tall on a sunny day
Basking in its warmth grand
A memorial of names and niches
Where voices of innocence speak
They cannot know war's misery

In winter's frosty grip they were
Where weapons lock in icy melt
Frostbite claims extremities all
Incompassionate, it takes them
In pneumonia's choking hold

In those years in God's fury
Men had to keep courage close
Sense of right lies within each soul
So sacrifice is more than just death
And virtue remains of humanity

The faces are gone, they bivouac
Their whispers ring still clear
In these ears that knew them
But time will claim all, quelling
Keep close freedom's abstractions

Empathy knows the toils of men
Who had to walk with frozen feet
To survive - breathing, eating cold
Where sleep could find oblivion
No sleep, and a frozen canteen

Yet in foreign fields tall, unkept
Lie obscured graves of the foe
Men who fought as duty called
Obligated to serve by tyrant's duress
They merit honour in their loss

To diminish the enemy's distinction
Is to find destruction is mutual
Honour and prestige are balanced
By the victorious and the defeated
Who must regain peace in life again

Bastogne remember them, remember them all
That their lives will always have meaning
Since their blood sated those fertile fields
The iron of arms reduced to rusted relics
Surely the flowers will always grow there
