Original lyrics

Translation
Janko has gone to sleep
Janko has gone to sleep under a poplar...
"Oh, my sweet, my beloved,
My beautiful black eyes,
Look at me.
Oh, my beautiful black eyes,
Look at me."
Under a golden-boughed poplar
Are my sweet, my beloved,
My beautiful black eyes..
"Look at me,
Oh, my beautiful black eyes,
Look at me."
"I've broken off one of the poplar's golden boughs,
Oh, my sweet, my beloved,
My beautiful black eyes,
Look at me.
Oh, my beautiful black eyes,
Look at me..!"

Author's comments:
Ancient, hard-rending song of mourning from Kosovo & Metohija.
Janko having fallen/gone to sleep is a metaphor for his having died. According to ancient pagan beliefs (in Slavic as well as ancient Greek and Roman cultures), breaking off a poplar bough/branch could open up the passage to the underworld.
Therefore, the girl's breaking off the golden bough is a metaphor for her wishing, in her grief, to die herself, that she may thus rejoin her beloved Janko and see his black eyes look upon at her again.
