I agree with you both. I guess you have understood the very sense of that line. :-)
But I have a little precisation: "me sento 'n core cantatore" is , literally: "I feel inside a "singer" heart , in the meaning of:"eager to sing".
The " 'n " is a contraction of "un"(indeterminative article).
Here is what I found in an about hundred years old dictionary:
"Cantatore" è fuor d'uso, e non si direbbe che di chi ha smania, prurito di cantare, o bene o male.
