I asked the moon

I asked the moon1
and the sun doesn’t know a thing.
I showed her my burns,
and the moon laughed at me.
And since the sky didn’t look its best2
and I wasn’t healing,
I told myself, “What misfortune!”3
and the Moon laughed at me.
I asked the moon
if you still wanted me.
She said, “I don’t usually4
deal with cases like that.”5
And you and I,
we were so sure,
and sometimes we told ourselves
it was just an affair6
and it wouldn’t last.
I don’t have much to tell you,
nor much to make you laugh,
because I always imagine the worst,
and the best hurts me.
I asked the moon
if you still wanted me.
She said, “I don’t usually
deal with cases like that.”
And you and I,
we were so sure,
and sometimes we told ourselves
it was just an affair
and it wouldn’t last.
- 1. French idiom meaning “to ask for the impossible”; here also literal, addressing the Moon.
- 2. Set phrase meaning “didn’t look good / impressive”; lit. “did not have a proud look.”
- 3. Elevated, slightly old-fashioned exclamation: “What misfortune!”
- 4. Deliberately colloquial contraction for “Je n’ai pas l’habitude” (“I’m not used to / I don’t usually”).
- 5. “Cases like this,” i.e., situations/people of this sort.
- 6. Here “an affair” or “a fling.”
