All I know is I have heard it sang this way by old folk in Appalachia all my life so if your say these verses were added in last few years it would have too be the last fifty years Sadie Daniels sang those verses in church when I was a kid k

Just because you hadn't heard it before doesn't mean it didn't exist those verses are also in older hymnals I used too wonder why they were in Methodist hymnal but not the Baptist

this is not John Newton's original lyric.
Of the seven stanzas above, 4, 5, and 6 are added just a few years ago almost as a medley, more of a tangent. Then the last (7th) stanza reverts to Newton's original tune. Not bad, but non-traditional, often unexpected by those who expect to hear a changeless Standard.
