Pretty sure copyright law itself hasn't changed. But yeah, would likely be actually better for copyright holders to not put as much stress on enforcing their copyright towards potential fans - I for one am much more likely to buy something after having read/listened to it.

Copyright law of translations is quite complex and differs between countries - as far as I remember, versions of it both include that a translation is its own artistic work and thereby protected by a copyright itself, and that it's derived work and the translator needs to ask for the original author's permission to publish it. Which we obviously don't do.
