Paradies

Paradise

Who can tell what will happen to us
Maybe it is true
That life is an exam
In which we shall prove ourselves

Only who passes it with an A
Is allowed to get into Heaven
The whole filthy rest
Gets the hell of rebirth

As a tourist in Ibiza
As a traffic policeman
As a clown in a circus show
Whom no one wants to see

To escape this destiny
We shall try honestly
Start every day with a prayer
Instead of aspirin
Only who always runs straight away to the confessional
As it would be a race
And names every sin there
Negotiates an absolution

I don't want to paradise
When the way there is so hard
I don't apply for asylum
I don't mind staying here

Who can rightly hold knife and fork
And who sits up straight at dinner
Who always says YES and THANKS
Whose odds aren't long
Who queues well-behaved in every line
With shining shoes
Who bears his destiny with humility
Will get salvation

We shall listen and pay attention
Do what we are told
Subordinate and imitate
From the first day to the last
Always play kindly by the rules
As they are ordered
As they are written down in the book of life
For ever and ever, amen

I don't want to paradise
When the way there is so hard
Who knows, if we'd have a better life there -
Behind this door

I don't want to paradise
When the way there is so hard
And before I beg on my knees
I don't mind staying here

I don't want to paradise
When the way there is so hard
If I'm not allowed to get in as I am
I'll stay outside before the door

I don't want to paradise
When the way there is so hard
I dont apply for asylum
I don't mind staying here

>"I don't want to paradise"
shouldn't that rather be: I don't want to go (get) to paradise ?

As long as you don't mean "parasitize", it's all good... ;)

AFAIK, "Ich will nicht ins Paradies" is something like "I don't want to find myself in Paradise". It could be easily translated into Russian as "Я не хочу в рай", preserving all the implied sense but the English translation should require more that just a modal (or modal-like) verb. You can say "I don't want Paradise", but this would be far away from that normal meaning provided by German and Russian.
This is an interesting song, indeed.

"Subordinate ourselves" makes sense, as far as I know.

I don't want to get to paradise
If it is so hard getting there

And may it be "I don't want to be carried (moved) to Paradise"? In the passive voice? I guess it may...
