Sprout
If I hadn't met you that day
I wonder what kind of girl I'd have become
Wandering from city to city, sprouting beans from my feet
I just kept walking without destination while crying
"A young girl shouldn't involve herself in a bad game"
People kept calling me that and I cried
My heart still aches every time I think about that
Even then, I'll never leave your side
If I hadn't met you that day
I wonder what kind of girl I'd have become
The smell of white rose, the singing of birds
I lived quietly, unaware of those things
Someone has stolen my heart
I will receive the judgement of God
It scared me every time I think about it
Even then, I'll never leave your side

This is Asaoka Megumi's debut song and her second most popular song released in 1972. This was where it all began.
video with youtube id x5MrQD0KnAg was removed automatically due to unavailabilityMegumi was initially reluctant to become a singer after watching her older sister struggled so much with her own singing carreer for years yet she could never make it. Megumi also already had job as model in a teenage magazine. After refusing the offers several times, finally she agreed to it because she was afraid that same record company would fire her sister, beside it will also help her family's financial. Somehow this song gained huge popularity, reached rank 3 in Oricon chart, won her "Best Newcomer" award, and established her as one of the most popular Japanese idol in 1970s.

This song's lyrics could be a bit confusing. What's with the sprout / bud? What it has to do with this song? I found a Japanese blog that try to interpret this song. Looks like it's a metaphor that when someone walk too much, sprouts start to grow on the trail behind their feet....or from their feet(?), something like that.
So, what's this lyrics about? A young girl ran away from home, wandering around while crying. Then she met a guy she fall in love with. But people who saw them criticized her to not involved herself in a "bad game". Either the man is a 'bad guy' or their relationship is taboo (maybe an affair). She even know it is wrong ("...will receive judgement from God"). But for a girl who used to live a dull and gloomy life ("...lived quietly, had no interest on flowers, birds, etc"), this relationship is something new and exciting....a guilty pleasure. So she won't leave him no matter what.
Seems like her MV i posted above can't no longer be played. So here's another one. Simply click "watch on youtube" in the box below, it will be opened in new tab.
^ Asaoka Megumi has more than 120 songs from all her albums, but this is her only song that has an MV, there's even two versions of it. Maybe it's because in 1970s people still listening to the song from vinyl records so a music video wasn't that important back then.
