Maybe

Hello old friend, tell me how you are,
The years go by; we have not spoken;
I do not want you to think that I have forgotten you.
As for me, I cannot complain,
I am working, the same as always,
Even though I confess that there is much loneliness in my life.

Chorus:
At the bottom of it all, you and I are pretty much the same,
And I go crazy just thinking.
Maybe, life separates us more each day.
Maybe, life distances us from reality.
Maybe, you are searching for a desert and I am searching for an ocean.
Maybe, thanks to life, today I love you more.

Hello old friend, tell me how you are,
There is so much I want to explain to you,
Because no one knows if tomorrow I will (still) be here.
Sometimes we have gone backwards,
You have always wanted to be right,
But I am tired, and do not want to argue.

Maybe, life separates us more each day.
Maybe, life distances us from reality.
Maybe, you are searching for a desert and I am searching for an ocean.
Maybe, thanks to life, today I love you more.

Hello old friend, tell me how you are.

And I do not want you to think that I have forgotten you.

Anmärkning:

David Myers lived in Perú for two years in 1977-8 as a proselyting missionary. He spent about one half of that time in the people's homes and working directly with the natives. He spent his last six months in Cajamarca, a small town in the northern Peruvian Andes, without another gringo within 100 km in any direction. He says, "At the end of my precious time in Perú, I was totally and completely immersed in Spanish. I ate, read, spoke, dreamed, and thought in Spanish. It permeated my soul."

  • "Tu buscas", present tense, is usually translated into the present progressive in English. Thus, it becomes "You are searching for".
  • I opted to use Ocean instead of Sea as a translation for "mar" to augment the difference between a desert and a body of water.
  • The word "viejo", when used in this context, is non-gender specific. When used as an antecedent adjective, it refers to any long-time (or old) friend, not necessarily a male friend or a friend who is old.
  • The word "fondo" literally means bottom. An English-speaker might say something such as "When you get right down (to the bottom of) it ..."
  • The infinitive "Alejar" means to go far away, or to put distance between two objects. My preferred translation is "to distance".

Muchísimas gracias por la traducción más hermosa. Puedo ver realmente qué Enrique quiere decir en tus palabras. No comments on how to make it better, just an awesome job you did with this. Thanks so much!

I view this song as a long time breakup, the loss of a loved one; or an un requited love affair that has resulted in a distance between friends. This translation is spot on, and the best I've seen.
