xristos.11. Acherousia is according to the greek mythology the "Land of Hades" (the modern-day valley of former Fanari municipality, Preveza regional unit, Epirus).
It extends from the village Hoika until the sea and from Hoika until until Paramythia (the Elysian Fields - Meadow of asphodels).
The river Acheron and its side rivers Pyriphlegethon and Cocytus run through it.
In the lake Acherousia of the Acheron river, it was believed that there was one of the entrances to Hades (Gates of Hades).
Charon (son of Erebus and Nyx) was the boatman who carried the souls of the dead to Hades and took
the obol (coin) that was put on the lips of the dead by the relatives.
At the chasm of Styx stood the guardian Cerberus who was the three headed dog with a lion's tail that had a snake's ending and
his hair and body were filled with snakes.
The souls were presented at the court of Hades (Hades, Minos, Rhadamanthys and Aeacus) that judged the actions of the deceased one in life.
Lake Acherousia doesn't exist anymore.
It was drained in the 1960s by the British company Boots Ltd and a camplicated network of irrigation channels
crosses the field of Mesopotamos an Ammoudia.
