Oh broad valleys, oh heights,
Oh beautiful green forests
You, of my joys
and of my sorrow the dwelling.
There outside, always betrayed
the wild world rushes:
Close your arc now about me,
you green tent.
There stands written in the woods
A still, heartfelt word
Concerning right life and love
And the haven of humankind.
I have faithfully read
The words, simple and true.
And through my entire being
they surged, unspeakably lucid.
Soon I will leave you
and go far away.
In colorful, lively, narrow streets
I'll see life's play:
And in the middle of life
Your ancient power will
Lift me, lonely though I be,
In this way my heart won't grow old.
