Ballad for the Medic

They proceeded slowly. All was calm.
Across the river, the Cyperus rustled.
Suddenly, lightning has thundered, one shouted: "Man down!"
"Be right there!" replied the medic.
"We've hit a mine!" shouted the injured,
"I am right here beside you," replied the medic.

A hail of fire was pouring down, a discontinuous heavy hail,
Across the river, upon the rustling Cyperus.
"Just leave me here," requested the injured,
"Quit your nonsense," replied the medic.
"Save yourself," requested the injured.
"I'm staying right here with you," replied the medic.

And only both remained, the field was open.
And only both remained, exposed to the fire.
"We're doomed..." mumbled the injured,
"Hang on to me," replied the medic.
"You're injured too..." mumbled the injured,
"Oh, it's not so bad," replied the medic.

Heavy was the fire, heavy! It was hard, hard to move.
Just never despair, never despair,
"I'll always remember you," swore the injured.
"Just don't fall..." mumbled the medic.
"I'm yours until the day you die," swore the injured.
"This is the day that I die," replied the medic.

Suddenly, a cloud of smoke, suddenly, the wind had picked up,
And a shadow on the ground was nearing, loud.
"We're saved! They're coming!" cried the injured,
But he did not hear a word from the medic.
"Brother! Brother mine!" cried the injured.
Across the river, the Cyperus rustled,
"Brother! Brother mine!
Brother! Brother mine!
My brother!..."
