Childless daughter-in-law
A cuckoo was chirping sadly,
It was chirping, hey, in the center of the village.
It wasn't a cuckoo that was chirping,
It was [actually] a childless daughter-in-law1.
Oh my, a cuckoo was chirping, Yove le, yo2
A cuckoo bird, Yove, Yove le,
Oh my, above the houses3, on an oak tree, Yove le, yo.
On an oak tree, Yove, Yove le
Oh my, it is chirping so much, that it is resembling [human] words, Yove le, yo
Oh my, the bird is talking, Yove,
Oh my, Kolyo4 has nine daugthers-in-law,
And a tenth one - Radulinka5, Yove le
Oh my, all [nine] each have a child, Yove le, yo
All [nine] each have a child,
Oh my, Radulinka - [has] not a single [child],
All [nine] each have a child, all [nine] each have a child
Oh my, on Easter, Yove le, yo,
On Easter day, Yove, Yove le
Oh my, the evil mother-in-law spoke, Yove le, yo
She said, Yove:
- Oh my, o daughters-in-law, dear daughters-in-law, Yove le, yo
Oh my, o daughters-in-law, dear daughters-in-law,
Go wash yourselves and braid [your hair],
Then go to the horo-dance6, Yove le.
And the youngest one Radulinka, Yove le, yo
She will be sitting [your] sons [for you]
The youngest one Radulinka
She will be sitting [your] sons [for you], because she is childless.
A cuckoo was chirping sadly,
It wasn't a cuckoo that was chirping,
It was [actually] a childless daughter-in-law,
It was [actually] a childless daughter-in-law.7
- 1. The meaning of the original word невеста in modern Bulgarian is bride. Since the character is newly married into the family I chose "daughter-in-law" in order to emphasize the troubled relationship between mother- and daughter-in-law.
- 2. This catchy phrase occurs several times throughout the song. It's literal meaning is "Hey Yovana". "Yove" being the vocative diminutive form of the female name Yovana. The phrase's role in the story might be to introduce an imaginary listener whom a choir is singing the song to. The phrase also contributes to the rhythm.
- 3. In the original "above the village".
- 4. A male name.
- 5. A female name.
- 6. Тraditional dance played in circle by people holding hands.
- 7. The reason for the daughter-in-law to be represented as a sad cuckoo, is that she is being neglected by the family. The mother-in-law is treating her badly. The reason is that she is the youngest daughter-in-law in the family and has not gifted her in-laws with a grandchild. She is therefore forced to stay home and take care of the other children, while their mothers have fun on the Easter fair.
