Original lyrics
Wo wird einst des Wandermüden
Wo wird einst des Wandermüden
Letzte Ruhestätte sein?
Unter Palmen in dem Süden?
Unter Linden an dem Rhein?
Werd’ ich wo in einer Wüste
Eingescharrt von fremder Hand?
Oder ruh’ ich an der Küste
Eines Meeres in dem Sand?
Immerhin! Mich wird umgeben
Gottes Himmel, dort wie hier,
Und als Totenlampen schweben
Nachts die Sterne über mir.

Translation
When my final breath has faded
When my final breath has faded,
Where’s the plot that shall be mine?
In the south, by palm-trees shaded?
Under lindens by the Rhine?
Scraped out in some desert outpost
Quickly, by a stranger’s hand?
Shall I end up on a sea-coast,
Resting underneath the sand?
Still and all! God watches over:
Sky’s above us everywhere;
When I’m buried, lamps will hover,
Stars of night presiding there.
