mikistliI hope that you will read this as a poem and forgive that this is not a "word for word" translation. This is a ... tough song to translate... I made countless changes, corrections and updates - all in all - for about 3 years before I first published it. And I still still find a lot of room for creativity in translating this song. It was great to discover this website and see at least one other translation of this "most popular Russian Folk song" into English. I found where I stand with my struggles and frustrations in line with everybody... :-) .... In my translation poem I tried to make the English words "follow the melody" as well as to make the English lyrics to be easy to understand by a broader audience - the Russian natives who understand and speak some English and the English native speakers who may be not very familiar with Russian folk culture and the historical context of this song. The original song is beautiful, powerful, but pretty heavy, with some very depressing notes. I am hoping that my translation of the "Ominous Dream" would help someone to relate to their own life and their personal battles, misfortunes, missteps and blows of fate...
