I am a man (Je suis un homme)

English translation

I am a man

Versions: #1#2#3#4
I am a caveman
I am an ape or a fish
On the earth, all year round,
I run in circles, I run in circles

I am only one, then millions
I am a man with a lion heart
At war, all year round,
I run in circles, I run in circles

I am a man full of ambitions
Nice car and nice house
In the bedroom, in the living room
I run in circles, I run in circles

I make love and revolution
I analyze the facts of the matter
I go forth, go forth backwards
I run in circles, I run in circles

You see, I'm not a man
I am the king of illusion
At heart, may I be forgiven,
I am the king, the king of fools

I've made the world my way
Cast in gold and concrete
Caged body and prisoned heart
I run in circles, I run in circles

Sitting in front of my television
I am the negation of man
Pure convenience goods
I've had it, I've had it

You see, I'm not a man
I am the king of illusion
At heart, may I be forgiven,
I am the king, the king of fools

I control fire, I control the game
I control the world, and behold what I've done with it
A frozen land, a scorched land
The land of men that men forsake!

I am a man with his back to the wall
Like a freak of nature
On the earth, with no other reason
I run in circles, I run in circles

I am a man and I consider
All the horror of my nature
For my trouble, my punishment
I run in circles, I run in circles

Great translation just a few technical errors
I am a Cro-Magnon => Unless one was really into archeology and ancient history, no English speaker would know what this meant, Better to just use caveman.
I go round in circles => The correct idiom would be "I run in circles" or even "I'm chasing my tail."
I am a man plenty of ambitions => I am a man full of ambition or I am a man with plenty ambitions
the king of the fools => the king of fools
Pure convenience good => goods
The world master, and behold what I've done with it => World master doesn't really make sense. You can say I rule the world and behold...
The men's land that men forsake! => The land of men that men forsake sounds better Smile

When will I learn not to click 'thanks' until I've saved my comment Smile

Instead of "a lion heart," "a lion's heart."

Instead of "I go forth, go forth backwards," "I advance, I advance backwards." Go forth doesn't imply making progress in the same way that advance does, weakening the paradox of
"avance à reculons." But your choice is not technically wrong, it's just a matter of opinion about style.

"Prisoned heart" is an accurate but very archaic way of translating it. Nowadays we would say "imprisoned heart."

Instead of "convenience goods," "consumer goods."

"The land of men that men forsake" is ambiguous because 'that' can refer to persons, things, any case, and singular or plural. If it's the land that's forsaken, "The land of men, which men forsake." If it were the men that were forsaken, "The land of men whom men forsake."

"Sur la terre, en toute saison" should be "On the Earth, in all seasons" instead. It rings better and is literal to the translation.

SilverPrince     December 21st, 2015

"C'est moi le maître du feu, le maître du jeu, le maître du monde" Would be the "It's me, the master of fire, the master of the game, the master of the world"

"I am a singular man of millions" would be better than "I am only one, then millions" in stanza 2.

SilverPrince     December 21st, 2015

"A la guerre en toute saison" hould be "To the war of all seasons"

"Mais mon compte est bon, mon compte est bon" thanks for the wonderful translation, I am curious about this line, I have seen it translated so many different ways every time i see this song, it is a french idiom and why does it come out so differently for so many people?

LittlePumpkin     January 30th, 2016

Basically, "mon compte est bon" is an expression which means that whatever you do in the future, your story is over already.
"Il va me régler mon compte" = this means that someone is going to take care of you in a REALLY bad way. In this case, "mon compte" means "myself" (kinda)
so when you say "mon compte est bon" literally my case is good x) it means that you're already finished.

thank you so much, this line has puzzled me for a long time because I have seen it translated so many different ways. it is great to finally know what it really means. Smile Okay I see now I had seen people translate this literally which really it has more meaning than that.
