Der Lindenbaum
Am Brunnen vor dem Thore
Da steht ein Lindenbaum:
Ich träumt' in seinem Schatten
So manchen süßen Traum.
Ich schnitt in seine Rinde
So manches liebe Wort;
Es zog in Freud' und Leide
Zu ihm mich immer fort.
Ich mußt' auch heute wandern
Vorbei in tiefer Nacht,
Da hab' ich noch im Dunkel
Die Augen zugemacht.
Und seine Zweige rauschten,
Als riefen sie mir zu:
'Komm her zu mir, Geselle,
Hier findst du deine Ruh'!
Die kalten Winde bliesen
Mir grad' in's Angesicht,
Der Hut flog mir vom Kopfe,
Ich wendete mich nicht.
Nun bin ich manche Stunde
Entfernt von jenem Ort,
Und immer hör' ich's rauschen:
Du fändest Ruhe dort!

Translation
The Linden Tree
By gate, by well and water
There stands a linden tree;
I dreamed within its shadow
The dreams that set me free.
Its bark records my longing
Inscribed there with a knife;
In happiness or sorrow,
The still point of my life.
I passed it on my journey
Beneath the midnight skies,
When all around was darkness,
And yet I closed my eyes.
I heard its branches rustle
As though they tried to speak:
‘Come back to me, dear comrade,
For here’s the rest you seek!’
The icy winds were blowing,
My eyes began to burn,
A gust left me bareheaded
But still I did not turn.
Now this was long-time passing,
That place is far behind;
'It's here', the tree still murmurs,
The only peace you'll find!'
