A magical legend from the antiquity

meanwhile preens, her long golden hair ...

Gilded brush the hair is combing5

while she sings ... a charming psalmody ...

In his little vessel a boatman

prey is of yearning frenzy,

forgetting the sinister rock's bank

1. • What'd = 'what would'.
• Bedeuten: "significar", "querer decir", "presagiar" (omen).
2. • Sinn: "sentido", "mente". Pero como estos versos son del período Romántico, es mejor usar sinónimos poéticos de 'mind' (mente) como son 'heart' (corazón) y 'spirit' (alma).
3. • Berges: "montaña". Rock black reemplaza a 'mountain' para evitar posteriores repeticiones. Ademas, las fotografías muestran que la roca Lorelei, al ser de pizarra, es más oscura que las circundantes.
4. • Jungfrau = maiden = nymphette = undine.
El concepto es "una joven virginal".

6. • Unearthly: "aterrenal", "sobrenatural".
7. • Foresee: "vislumbrar", "entrever". Aunque es poco frecuente.

• El poema de Heine es el relato de una premonición angustiante del protagonista, que en el sueño parece ser el barquero -aunque no se reconozca- lo que le provocaría desazón. Para destacar esta impresión utilizo letra cursiva en lo que correspondería a su ensueño -la leyenda- mientras que los versos inicial y final serían la realidad o presente del narrador.
• El nombre Lorelei puede significar "roca murmurante" por el 'canto' de la ninfa (hasta el siglo XIX podía verse una pequeña caída de agua cuyo sonido era amplificado por la roca) o "roca al acecho" por las corrientes de la zona que provocaban naufragios.
La grafía actual del nombre es Loreley o Lorelei, antes Lore Lay. He agregado la hache para que sea una [o] aspirada, como el sonido que se escucha estando sumergidos.
• Una ondina (undine) es una deidad acuática, una ninfa ('capullo de rosa', 'joven en edad casadera') asociada a un río, manantial o fuente. Pero 'Ondina' es también el nombre particular de otra ninfa -que tiene su propio mito- y que se generalizó para identificar a todo el grupo, por lo que es mejor usar otra palabra: podría ser 'náyade', 'nereida', 'sirena' (un ser mitad mujer y mitad pez) o simplemente 'doncella'.
Es pertinente señalar que en los vasos griegos donde se grafica la aventura de Ulises en "La Odisea", las sirenas son representadas como aves con cabeza de mujer. Tal vez la imagen de la mujer-pez esté más asociada con "Derceto", nombre que los griegos daban a la diosa siria Atargatis, que tenía ese aspecto.
