say good bye

say good bye

loneliness 止められない強がりよね
loneliness 言えない
loneliness 背伸びしてたあの日々に
もう loneliness
say good bye

Translation

Loneliness

The beach scenery reflected in my eyes...
...brings my attention to the ongoing shimmering summer
The time goes by so fast, I've been wandering around
Let me believe in the voice of my heart

This loneliness is unbearable, I try to be strong
The unspeakable loneliness...
The loneliness that has kept on growing every day...
The loneliness that I'll soon...
...say goodbye to

With one eye closed, I take picture with my polaroid camera
No more hesitation, I've made up my mind to give you a call
The time goes by so fast, I've tried to run away enough
Let me feel your heartbeat

This loneliness is unbearable, I try to be strong
The unspeakable loneliness...
The loneliness that has kept on growing every day...
The loneliness that I'll soon...
...say goodbye to

This loneliness is unbearable, I try to be strong
The unspeakable loneliness...
The loneliness that has kept on growing every day...
The loneliness that I'll soon...
...say goodbye to

Takeguchi Kimiko is a top idol singer from the alternate universe. There's no information about her birth date but she seems to be around the same age as early 1980s idols of our world.

Takeguchi Kimiko (a.k.a Amaiwana) winning "The Best Ten" in her timeline

^ their world also seem to have their version of Matsuda Seiko and Nakamori Akina, and Takeguchi Kimiko was big enough to defeat them both and won #1 in alternate version of "The Best Ten"

The year is 1983 (*in their timeline). WIth an already established career in their Japan, Takeguchi Kimiko was about to expand her career overseas and made her US debut:

A "mysterious" songwriter / producer from California: Ginger Root was hired to produce her song

But Kimiko didn't like the song "Loneliness"...

^ ...right before what supposed to be her first performance in the US, she suddenly sulked and left just like that. It was an emergency, so Ginger Root - who was a songwriter but never a singer before - was asked to perform his own song in place of Kimiko. He got an instant fame and his song even reached #1 in Billboard (*since that was in the US) chart.

After watching Ginger Root appeared on TV programs and CMs, Takeguchi Kimiko grew to respect him and decided to come back and worked together with him on his other song:

^ (1:12) in their verse, they also have their version of Nakamori Akina, Ishino Mako, Kawai Naoko, Iwasaki Hiromi, Kyon2 and Matchy.

They even work together once again in anime OST project:

...still, Takeguchi Kimiko never sings "Loneliness"

But in yet another parallel universeGinger Root found a VHS of Takeguchi Kimiko from that timeline singing "Loneliness"

...and brought it back to his own timeline

Time travel is child's play, the "mysterious" Ginger Root actually can travel between parallel universes. And since "alternate universe 1" (*the world of Takeguchi Kimiko) and "alternate universe 2" (*the world of the other Kimiko) are still in their early 1980s and don't have Youtube, most likely this Ginger Root dude is from our own world from 2023!!

...and that is the backstory...

Now, the real people behind these characters:

Ginger Root

Ginger Root is an indie band from California  led by singer-songwriter and instrumentalist Cameron Lew. What's unique is that they upload their music videos on Youtube in 1980s retro style and even give them storyline, just like this "Takeguchi Kimiko" arc.

Amaiwana

Amaiwana (born: January 1, 2000) is a Japanese singer / songwriter / Youtuber. She is a big fan of Showa music and fashion. She was the one behind the character Takeguchi Kimiko in a collaboration with Ginger Root.

All the songs, the characters and the storyline belong to Ginger Root. I don't own anything and just translate this song for fun without any monetary gain.

Lol, even I saw this song around, I recognize that tower! But in real life, that tower was a stable of a show for small idols, "ohayo sutajio", it ran from 79 to 86, you can see it in these performances...

...Do you get deja vu? ^^

That's why I add her to retro idol series. 😂 I remember watching Tsuchiya Kaori and/or some of those 1980s idols from Makenaide video sang there. Even Okada Yukiko used to sing there in her early career. 😆

They really recreated the 1980s show, there's even the 1980s US (the California dude) meet the 1980s Japan. His song was charted on Billboard chart there, not Oricon. 😅

The first video of Koide Hiromi looks a bit like Jounouchi Sanae tho. 😅

Yukko really had a Cinderella like "rags" to "riches" story, she went from small shows to big ones!

Right, the vibe was spot on, the graphics, the way they shot the video! 10/10

Right, she was also a good singer (tho she never gave enka a try), I ended up liking her songs much more than I originally thought. If you want, her last single has an interesting story! Her best album that was released last year managed to get at number 70 on the oricon chart!

The poor Yukko had climbed her way from the bottom, performing in "Ohayo, Asahi desu" and all those small shows, to swept almost all newcomer awards available, to regularly ranked in "The Best Ten" and "The Top Ten", to getting her first Oricon #1 spot, and could probably on her way to Kohaku. 🥲

The CM too looks like early 1980s Japanese CM. 😅

Ginger Root has some pretty good songs tho. And Amaiwana looks like a real person from that era. I think I have seen a small idol with similar looks.

What was her story? Did she run away too like Kimiko? 😅

I saw someone saying that they thought that she would've probably been invited to Kohaku 1986, she would've been there with Yuki Saito

I have a couple of their songs saved on spotify, they do have good songs

Her 5th single had been completed, both A and B-side, and a few copies had been already sent out, but then...BOOM, Hiromi was kicked out from her agency for some reason (some people said that it was Akinas doing, but Hiromi said that Akina had nothing to do with it and that she was kicked out for "breaking a rule"). The single goes unreleased, but suddenly idol Shinobu Horie performs a cover of Saikin no Musume (Hiromis single) multiple times, but never releases it for some reason. Then an idol from the same agency as Hiromi, Mayumi Abe, releases a single thats a cover of the B-side of Hiromis single. She stops singing (?) after this single (tho I've read that maybe she released some other single cassettes, but I can't find any info online). In 2010, her agency releases a best album without Hiromis consent, and it gets recalled quickly. Finally, last year, Hiromi released her best album wich contains 5 unreleased songs (2 singles, 2-b sides and a cover of a special song that I'll upload tomorrow⁓). Quite the story ^^"

The Kohaku 1986 was really dominated by idols. Kikuchi Momoko and Honda Minako were invited although they declined. Oginome made her first appearance and Kawai Naoko her last. There's Pyon² and the two "queens", and their captain, a certain ponytail idol. I'd love to see Sato Kayo being added there. Older singers could make way. 😜

Nyanko girls also performed in their own "Kohaku" created by Fuji TV (and only lasted two years 😅). But to be fair, Onyanko Club deserved a place in real Kohaku, they were so dominant in 1985-1986, even their comic relief sub-group could block Shonentai from Oricon #1 spot.

But he said he didn't upload it to Spotify, or maybe it's just "Loneliness"  since the Japanese lyrics were written by Amaiwana herself.

What a bad luck. What rule tho, don't tell it's something about smoking, or some nyan nyan scandal like Warabe member.

Akina seemed like a decent person tho, at least in front of the camera, I doubt she was the type that would ruin someone's career. Wasn't Akina the one who endorsed her in a show before her official debut?

Her agency is such an *, they still tried to rip her off in 2010, decades after she retired?! 😤 Poor Koide.

Lol, the Enka singers have been invitered time and time again, they can skip one time 😆

I've heard that Kohaku might not invite someone whos famous because they find their skills to be lacking, tho it could be false

I havent seen loneliness on spotify, I was talking about two other songs, loretta and another one whos name I can't Remember

As far as I'm aware, she never said what rule She broke, but like I can't even think of something so big that her agency would think that its ok to kick her out After spending money on the single (but Hey, atleast the single Is very catchy)

Actually, Hiromi wasn't Akinas little sister, that was Yukari Yamamoto (whos now on LT!). Hiromi debuted in 1983 and people called her the next Akina, but some people thought that Akina didnt like the name and that she kicked Hiromi out of the agency because of that, but its not true, even Hiromi confirmed that Akina had nothing go do with it. actually Akina has Always come across to me as a good and kind person

Right, Hiromi was quick to act and she got the compilation taken down in less than a month I think, her new compilation Is great tho, It has her whole discography + 5 unrealesed songs (3 of wich we never knew existed!) + instrumentals to her singles, all done by Hiromi. Hopefully I manage to get it, I really wanna hear the two new songs included, Seishun no Mukougawa and Jun'ai Story

This translation is wonderful, thank you!

Ginger Root's Nisemo album inspired by the Showa era is amazing. Especially the idols during that time! I enjoyed all the songs on the album and was happy to be introduced to Amaiwana. I was wondering, have you ever written the Japanese lyrics in Romaji? I've been interested in singing this song for karaoke, but couldn't find anyone else try.

Thank you.

Yes, I love that their videos are made in Showa style, they look like they're really from 1980s. This site has automatic transliteration feature. Right above the Japanese lyrics you can see a drop-down box, change "Japanese" to "romanization" and the program will generate the romaji version of the lyrics. A word or two might spelled differently but it is mostly correct.
