Nakamori Akina , born: July 13, 1965, was one of the two biggest idols in 1980s, rivaling Matsuda Seiko (biggest 1980s idol) and both had far surpassed the stats of any 1980s idols and the previous generation of 1970s idols.

From the age of 4 to 14, she attended a modern ballet school without skipping her class even once, her dance teacher thought she would become a dancer in the future. But inspired by her mom who was aspired to become singer when she was young, who also taught her singing, the young Akina started to show interest in singing. 

She first applied to "Star Tanjo!" (an infamous singing audition program that have produced a lot of big singers in the 1970s and 1980s including Yamaguchi Momoe, Pink Lady, Iwasaki Hiromi, Sakurada Junko, etc) in 1979 when she was at her second year of junior high school. At that time, "Star Tanjo!" had one judge that didn't mince her words, and she was even particularly harsh to Akina. In her first try, she sang Iwasaki Hiromi song and was told by the judge that she was "too mature for her age and lacked youthfulness" and got rejected. The next year (1980), she applied again, this time she sang Matsuda Seiko song, only to be told by the same judge "You sing well, but your face looks too childish. It'd be better for you to sing children songs" (*although Star Tanjou! didn't allow their contestants to sing children songs), and Akina got rejected again. 

She applied for the third time in 1981. Some of the program staffs were reluctant to let her participate but the chief producer saw something special in her and strongly recommended that she participate. In her third attempt, she passed with 392 points, the highest score in the show's history, and in the final round, representatives from 11 record companies and talent agencies raised their placards and offered her to sign with them. Akina decided to sign with Ken-On as her agency and Warner Pioneer as her label.

Nakamori Akina made her singing debut on May 1, 1982. Initially, she was considered to debut under the stage name "Mori Asuna" , but she rejected the idea, preferring to debut under her real name Nakamori Akina. Idols debuted in 1982 were collectively called "The Flower Group of 1982" since their year group produced many big idols (*which could only rivaled later by the "class'85" idols) compared to idols of other year groups, but Akina was on another level, her stats and popularity rapidly rose, leaving her peers behind, and quickly put her to the very top to rival the biggest idol at that time Matsuda Seiko. Crazy stats, records after records and countless individual awards followed as she established herself as one of the two "Idol queens" of 1980s. 

 

 

 

About this song 

This song is one of her iconic songs. Released on July 25, 1984, this song reached #1 on Oricon chart and sold 611,490 copiles. At the end of the year, this song was ranked #6 on Oricon yearly chart (6th highest selling song of 1984). It also won 6 different awards. Akina also performed this song in Kohaku Uta Gassen 1984 where she faced her then boyfriend Matchy (Kondo Masahiko, top 2 male idols of 1980s) in Kohaku song battle. This song also won her at least 6 awards with the biggest one was probably "Japan Record Awards". 

Trivia: The songwriter has clarified that the correct pronounciation of the title is "Jikkai", not "Jukkai".

You could even hear Yuu singing along with Akina in some parts, but I'm glad that she won the prize, she more than deserved it (Same goes for the nominees!)

Now you said it, I can hear the voice of Hayami Yuu and/or Ishikawa Hidemi helped filling in when Akina cried. "Group'82" idols also had these cute moments when they looked close and supported each other. 😆

The clip begins at 14:08, and Kimiko Mizuno had just won an award for probably the first time and ofc she got emotional, and Yuu, Akina (?) and Chiemi Hori (?) came to her side!

That reminds me of when Mako was retiring and she got all of those flowers!

It shows that "group'82" idols also had close friendship, not just the "group'83". Not sure if retro idols from the second half of 1980s also had this kind of friendship. 

Yes, those were Akina and Hori Chiemi. They even supported small idol that they probably didn't meet often (Mizuno Kimiko didn't seem to be the type that would appear in many singing programs). 

 

Momoe retirement at "Yoru no Hit Studio" was also emotional. Iwasaki Hiromi, Ota Hiromi, Sakurada Junko and other singers each sang different cover of her song and gave her flowers. Seems like "Yoru no Hit Studio" was a place to send off retiring idols. 😅

I haven't seen a lot of awards shows from the late 80's, but I don't recall seeing anything like this to be honest ^^"

From that compilation she appeared atlast once on some big shows, so they probably met once or twice, maybe Yuu met her more often since she got her biggest hit in 1983, but it's nice that they still helped eachother!

Lol, that makes it sound like it was some kind of train station and they were there to send of Momoe before she went on a long journey ^^"

I wonder if Akina is still in touch with other idols, I mean it'd be a bit sad if they lost touch ^^". I'd like to see Yuu Hayami take her out in her car to just chat. Same goes for Risa and Miki, wonder if they're still friends, almost 13 years after that last post

I remember when Wink won the grand prize in Japan Record Awards 1989, they sang alone, everyone else (Oginome, Hikaru Genji, etc) were just clapping from their seat. 

 

lol. All kind of things happened in "Yoru no Hit Studio", from meeting hatsukoi to saying goodbye to a friend. One of the song was "Ii Hi Tabidachi" (probably sung by Junko) so they did see her off to a long journey and "Yoru no Hit Studio" became "Yoru no Train Station". (;´∀`)

 

From what I read, when Hori Chiemi recovered from her cancer surgery, she wanted to have a reunion with all "group'82" idols but they couldn't contact Akina. But since she seems about to come back, maybe Akina will eventually be invited to some 1980s nostalgia show and she would meet Hayami Yuu again.

They live in different city and probably too busy being moms. But I should check Risa's blog sometime, who knows, maybe Ito Miki will pop up in Risa or Tomomi's blog. (;´∀`)

Shame, those moments are so cute, idols supporting eachothers when needed!

I like that about Yoru no Hit Studio, it really had a lot of things to it, from the mic pass to the stages to inviting people like hatsukois, crushes, parents or friends, or sometimes having to sadly say goodbye to someone

Lol, now I'm in the middle of listening to an Akina album, everything is coming full circle (≧▽≦)

Hopefully we see her again and hopefully she'll be in good health

I think her most famous one as actress is "Sugao no mamade" (Just the Way You Are). She did acting with Yasuda Narumi in 1992.
I was surprised she got skinny at that time.

But, I must say that I love her in "1985" than 1992. She was so cute! in 1985 and not too skinny. Her best time is around 1983-1985.

Ah, I think I heard of this before. Kondo Masahiko (マッチ) refused marriage. He did not announce why he didn't marry.
I think this is mainly because he had thick bond with his management company. (ジャニーズ事務所)
Sorry if I am wrong. that's what I heard long time ago. I heard the daughter of that company want to marry him, too. She stopped Kondo to marry Akina. that's what I heard. Maybe I'm wrong. I don't know.

Last year, Seiko's daughter had tragic accident so Seiko could not appear in Kohaku last year.
