Matsumoto Akiko (born: April 8, 1966), nick name: Akko, was a 1980s idol singer. When she was a kid, she liked 1970s idols like Yamaguchi Momoe and Pink Lady. Entering 1980s, when in junior high school, she admired Matsuda Seiko and thought she wanted to become an idol like her. At third grade of junior high school, she moved to Tokyo, transfered to Horikoshi High School (*high school full of idols and young celebrities. Hori Chiemi and Hayami Yuu were her classmates), started to participate in auditions includes "HoriPro Talent Scout Caravan", "Saijo Hideki 'little sister' audition" (<--won by Ishikawa Hidemi), and eventually participated in the infamous talent show: "Star Tanjou!" in 1982.

She made it into the final round, scouted by Watanabe Productions, and finally made her debut on May 21, 1983, which made her one of the "class'83 idols" (debuted at the same year as: Iwai Sayuri, Morio Yumi, Osawa Itsumi, Kuwata Yasuko, Kobayashi Chie, Ito Maiko, Hara Mayumi, etc).

She got her long awaited debut but her debut song only reached #131 in Oricon chart. In fact, none of her songs in 1980s managed to reach Oricon chart top 100. While "Class 1982" idols (*idols debuted in 1982) were called "the flower class" since they had a lot of big idols, "Class 1983" idols were called "the bad harvest" since - some had decent but - none of them had any especially impressive sales, they got sandwiched by big idols from "Class'82" and "Class'84". And even among "class'83", Akko belonged to some with the lowest stats, she didn't have that much entertainment jobs to the point that she needed to work part time in supermarket while still an idol.
It got worse! April 1, 1984, when she appeared on a variety program, she said an r-rated word loud live on air (later she said she didn't know the meaning of the slang word). Matsumoto Akiko got banned from Fuji TV and even some other major TV stations for two years. Whatever few jobs she had until then reduced to almost zero with only a local radio program hired her.
Several months later she came back to the variety show where the scandal happened (not belong to Fuji TV that banned her, they only had collaboration with Fuji TV on that day) and even became their regular cast. In addition, her best friend from the same agency who just made a breakthrough as comedian invited her to his variety show. In late 1980s during the booming of celebrities impersonation tv programs, she also won it twice. Slowly but surely, Matsumoto Akiko found her success as a baradoru (*baraiety aidoru, variety idol, idol specializes in variety show). She is still active in variety shows until now.
In her singing career, she has released a total of 8 singles. She originally didn't have any original album at all, but in 2013, to commemorate her 30th career anniversary, she released one album which production cost was paid with her own money. So she has 1 original album (and 1 compilation album released in 2010). There's no information about her total song sales. All her songs in 1980s failed to reach top 100 in Oricon chart, but in the 1990s, thanks to her popularity as variety show talent, she had songs that reached #45 and #29, but still, her highest selling song only sold 23,000 copies. For her acting career, she has appeared in 34 dramas (1986-2017) and 7 movies (1985-2023). And of course, she has appeared in a lot of variety programs.
