Hymn to gentrification

Where do you want us to live
I know that it’s an old house
And I see your sad eyes
But what can I do
In front of this huge beast
biting the belly of the city
Who said that the streets would stay the same
Who said that we would still be able to walk across the city
Who said the alleys would still be our toys
Who stole from us nature and told us to protect the environment
Who took the market and put it in a mall
Who kicked us out from our homes
Who divided them and rented us
Studios smaller than a coffin
Who came from Tel Aviv
I mean, who came from Poland
Who built glass towers
And demolished our balconies
Who started to sell majdoura and called it gourmet
Why does a plate of hummus cost 30 and no-one’s questioning it
Where are the simple shops
Why must everything be “concept”
Why is it necessary for fruit to be growing all year round
Who erased us from the stories
Who renewed the flea market
Who smoked petrol and exhaled clouds of anxiety
Who dug up the mountains
Who destroyed the Valley of the Cross
Who martialized the sea
And in peoples’ homes there are strangers living
They want me to leave the neighbourhood
They want to open a bar in place of my house
They want to paint the streets all blonde because they’re afraid of brown
They turn my uncle’s bakery into a gallery and call it “authentic”
If the capitalists have you on their mind, no one will protect you
Who terrorized the people
Who unleashed the security dogs
Who threatened the fathers and arranged jobs for the sons
Who paid for nostalgia
Who bought from us our safety
Who tripped up hope
And stole life from this place
