Also, the song is supposed to be sung by a man addressing his dead beloved girl.
See the line "Не житьё мне здесь без милой," -- There is no life for me here without [my] beloved [girl]
since "beloved" here is used in the feminine form.
The cause of her death is not addressed/discussed in the song.

Well, unlike many other songs, it's not possible to easily change this song so it could
be sung by woman about a man. It would require changing the line in question to:
"Не житьё мне здесь без милого"
and that would destroy both the meter and the rhyme (with "с могилой")
Therefore, female singers perform it as it is.
La chanson parle d'un homme qui pleure sa bien-aimée. Il y a donc quelques termes qui sont masculins ou féminins en conséquence.
Mais elle est aussi interprétée par des femmes, puisque le thème central est la perte d'un être aimé, peu importe finalement qu'on parle d'un homme ou d'une femme.
