Hello. Nice translation. I started doing mine before I saw yours, and also stumbled on "над панами я пан." The saying "Lord over Lords" is biblical. I can't imagine that the person in the song meant to say he felt he was above Gods by the phrase "над панами я пан". Besides, it's the lowercase "пан". Imho, the author meant "master above masters", or "boss above bosses", if you will. The young man in the song is probably a peasant himself, in addition to the fact that the girl was also poor (she'd be walking to the forest barefoot) ...

I would like to make Russian translation. Previous translations quite good, but you can't sing this beautiful song. There is no melody in all Russian translations. I might have to change some words, so people can sing it.

I agree that "Lord over Lords" comes down from the Bible. But it may be referred to exactly as such only in capital letters and without articles. Later it got a figurative meaning as it's used in here. However uneducated the young guys might have been they were Ukrainian, weren't they? It means they were regular church goers and heard the expression. Besides, "a boss" was introduced in the America of the 1920s after the name of a Dutch mafia leader. Can't see any possible associations, sorry. :cry:

It's to deep for me. Why don't we simplify a bit. The girl goes to meet a guy in the grove. He feels so good , he might get lucky tonight. Just for a short moment in life, he imagine himself as a pan ( lord or land owner). At this moment he is above all the lords and he doesn't care about their money and everything else. And you are right, Deineko. When I was a young lad, I used to love to sing this song. There are so many different lyrics and the one I sang, goes like this: Ти не лякайся, що ніженьки босі , вмочиш в холодну росу...

That's exactly what I'm talking about. It's simple "a (land)lord -пан" The Bible has nothing to do with it.
