The Prayer of François Villon

While the earth is still turning,
while the world is still brightly lit,
O Lord, give everyone
whatever they lack:
give to the smart a head,
give to the coward a horse,
give to the fortunate money ...
and do not forget about me.

While the earth is still turning -
O Lord, Thine is the power! -
let them who struggle for power
rule to their heart's content,
give a break to the generous,
at least for a day.
Give Cain repentance ...***
And do not forget about me.

I know: Thou art almighty,
in your wisdom I believe ,
As the killed soldier believes
that he lives on in paradise,
As each ear believes
your quiet words,
As we ourselves believe,
not knowing what we are doing!

Lord, my God,
my green-eyed one!
While the earth is still turning,
and it is strange even to herself
While she still has enough time and fire
Give Thou everyone a little bit...
And do not forget about me.

You are not actually giving a head to a smart person. He has a head on his shoulders. You can give him( share with him ) your wisdom. And I doubt, that anybody can sing this particular lyrics . I'm so sorry, if this comment seems to be harsh, but sometime, the truth will open your eyes and you will translate a lot better. I did.
Kind Regards
Anatoli

A smart person always knows he or she knows too little. That's one thing. Another thing is that, like most of my translations, it is not meant to be sung. The idea is that you sing the original and this helps you understand what it is behind the sounds you're uttering... It's not a very original idea but it works in language learning... So yes, it is not very "orthodox" in that sense, I couldn't agree more. So your comment, harsh or not, sorry or not, is a kind of .... off the mark because it is completely misguided. But maybe only "orthodox" translations are allowed here and I haven't noticed it yet. In any event, I see that there are many cases of more than one translation per language. I personally prefer it to only orthodox translations, only one per language allowed. But thanks for illuminating this issue for us..

Sincerely,

Kadmos
