Written by Joseph Kilna MacKenzie in memory of his great-grandfather, Charles Stuart MacKenzie of the Seaforth Highlanders (Moray, Scotland). He was killed in action in World War I. The couplet that speaks of falling to a German's gun is often omitted so that the song remains pertinent to other conflicts.
