I’ve been continuously experiencing the following problems with this site’s chat function for quite a while now. I’m not sure whether these problems are experienced by others as well or not.

1) The chat box sometimes completely disappears, and appears whenever it “likes” to appear.

2) Some members can’t be reached through the chat function, as their status dot continuously flickers from green (online) to grey (offline), even though they are online.

3) The Public Chatroom box suddenly appears whenever it “likes” to appear.

4) The list of online members in the chat box differs from the “Who’s online?” list on the homepage.

I can't tell if they happen to me as I only use the chat every once in a while.

But I had your 3rd problem. I doubt LT can do something, anyways; the chat is a script imported another site.

For me, instead of having it disappearing or appearing, it just flickers once while I'm supposed to be logged off. Not really a problem, but a bit annoying.

1 - that's a problem indeed.

2 - that might be because they're going through pages (in the site), so the chat is constantly closed and reopened. I advise all users to keep two tabs/windows of LT open, one for the chat and one to browse around. of course, it's still a problem and could be fixed - the fb chat doesn't have this problem for example.

3 - when someone posts something in the public chatroom it opens up. I assume that's a preference option the admins chose, even though we should have some option to turn it off.

4 - the sync is not 100% accurate, but you should also remember that users can turn off their chat and still be online.

I didn't know the script was imported from another site. I do know that when you reduce the window's size while you're on Facebook, a very similar chatbox, which is almost identical to the one on this site, appears. I'm not sure whether the script is copied from that one or from another site's chatbox, but anyway, Facebook doesn't seem to have any of these bugs. On the other hand, if it has been copied from another site on which the chatbox suffers from the exact same bugs, there's not much anyone can do to do something about these problems. Actually, aside from the Facebook chatbox, I haven't really seen any other similar chatbox elsewhere on the Internet yet!

That might be true indeed, but on the other hand, ArenaL5's explanation seems quite plausible too. People might just be supposed to be logged off, when it flickers, as I believe you are still online while you are going through two pages on this site. (I'm not sure about this, though.) :)

The biggest complaint seems to be that it would be nicer if it were auto-disabled (ie, if you were automatically logged off) when coming onto the site.

I very much agree with you on that. If this would be possible with the current script, it would definitely be an improvement. :)

Anyway, it's become much clearer to me what could be the cause of these problems! :)

I noticed a new bug in the chat function:

Some members appear to be online in the chatbox, whereas they are actually offline. I believe these accounts even appear to be online in the chatbox 24 hours a day. I'm not sure about the existence of this problem, as I don't look at this site 24 hours a day :P, but this appears to be the case with multiple accounts (quite a number of them). Has anyone else noticed this bug?
