Translation

Tribe of Brothers and Sisters

Seventy years on the road
I'm travelling and gazing
At what has been and what's become
And how my soul still yearns

From Masada of the sunrise
And Jerusalem of our prayers
From the beaches of the Galilee and Akhziv
From the parties of Tel Aviv

My father prayed and dreamed
Of living in the land of Israel
Now my child asks me
What's the story of Israel?

Here is home, here's the heart
And from you I'll not depart
Our forefathers, our roots,
And we are the flowers, the tunes
A tribe of brothers and sisters

The same town, the same street
Twelve sons of Jacob
Collecting our travels
In a backpack of memories

Man is the imprint of his native land
Carving lines in the palm of his hand
Between the prayers and vows
The scents of citrus groves

And in my mother's eyes
I'll always find a place inside
While on the guitar I play
An ancient tune which shows the way

Here is home, here's the heart
And from you I'll not depart
Our forefathers, our roots,
And we are the flowers, the tunes
A tribe of brothers and sisters

Since Genesis its all been woven together,
Patches, patches of the story
Like two words - to connect
With a poet's golden thread

I'm from here, I belong
And every friend is my brother
You are the one who in my heart beats
I'm the west and the east

Here is home, here's the heart
And from you I'll not depart
Our forefathers, our roots,
And we are the flowers, the tunes
A tribe of brothers and sisters

Here is home, here's the heart
And from you I'll not depart
Our forefathers, our roots,
And we are the flowers, the tunes

Thanks Regular smile I was looking for references as to whether there was a specific purpose behind it (e.g. Yom Hatzmaut, as it's so close to it), but couldn't find anything definitive.

Sahar90, there were initially a lot of inaccuracies in your original (very good) translation, so I posted a different version. I see that a lot has been adjusted, so I’m removing my separate corrections. For example, “A tribe of brothers and sisters”, mistakes שבת (sitting) for שבט (tribe)... it’s “Sitting as brothers and sisters”, not “tribe”. We still have a few differences, but your translation is altogether very good.

Shevet Achim V'Achiyot / Sitting as Brothers and Sisters

70 years in the car, I’m traveling and looking
At what was and what will be
And how my soul still yearns

From the Massada of sunrises
From Jerusalem of the [Slichot Kippur] prayers
From the Kinneret and Achziv beaches
From the parties of Tel Aviv

My father dreamed and prayed
To live in the Land of Israel
Today my child asks me
What is the story of Israel?

Home is here, as is the heart
And from you, I’ll not depart
Our forefathers, our roots
We are the flowers, the tunes
Sitting as brothers and sisters

The same neighborhood, the same street
Thirteen children of Jacob
Collecting together their wanderings
In their knapsack of longing

A man is the imprint of his native land
Engraving lines in the palm of his hand
Between the prayers and the vows
The fragrance of the citrus groves

And in my mother’s eyes
I’ll always find my place
An ancient tune which shows the way
Is playing on the guitar.

Home is here, as is the heart
And from you, I’ll not depart
Our forefathers, our roots
We are the flowers, the tunes
Sitting as brothers and sisters

Since Genesis, its all been sown together
Patches, patches of the story
Like two words – they connect
In the poet’s golden needle

I am from here, I belong
And every friend is like a brother
You are the one beating in my heart
I am east and west

Home is here, as is the heart
And from you, I’ll not depart
Our forefathers, our roots
We are the flowers, the tunes
Sitting as brothers and sisters

Home is here, as is the heart
And from you, I’ll not depart
Our forefathers, our roots
We are the flowers, the tunes
Sitting as brothers and sisters

Hi Aliza, I appreciate your comment and thank you for the kind words. I went over the translation again and picked up on one error (the 12 sons of Jacob), but other than that I couldn't find anything that wasn't a deliberate translation decision in the interests of ensuring the translation scanned like the original, and where possible also maintained the rhyming structure. As I wrote in my bio, my goal is always to maintain the sense and 'feel' of the original, rather than simply a word-for-word translation.

Regarding the title, in Galgalatz, YouTube and Spotify, the song title appears as "שבט" - tribe, and so that is how I approached it.

על מה היה ומה נִהְיָה -- not נִהְיֶה unless avraham tal is singing it wrong which isn't likely.. so sahara has this line correct IMO.

Slight change to add Nikud to נִהְיָהthe verb to make the meaning 100% clear --> he / it became
