Children
And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said, "Speak to us of Children."
And he said:
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as he loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.

Şi o femeie care ţinea un copilaş la pieptul ei a spus: ”Vorbeşte-ne despre copii!”
Şi el a spus:
Copiii voştri nu sunt copiii voştri.
Ei sunt fii şi fiicele Vieţii tânjind pentru ea însăşi.
Ei vin prin tine, dar nu din tine,
Şi deşi sunt încă cu tine ei nu îţi aparţin.
Tu poţi să le dai dragostea ta, dar nu gândurile tale,
Pentru că ei au propriile lor gânduri.
Tu poţi să oferi o casă corpurilor lor, dar nu sufletelor lor,
Pentru că sufletele lor sălăşluiesc în casa zilei de mâine, pe care tu nu o poţi vizita, nici chiar în visele tale.
Poţi să te străduieşti să fii ca ei, dar nu căuta să-i faci ca tine.
Pentru că viaţa nu merge înapoi nici nu rămâne cu ieri.
Voi sunteţi arcurile din care copiii voştri sunt trimişi ca săgeti vii înainte.
Arcaşul vede ţinta pe cărarea infinitului, şi El te îndoaie cu puterea Sa ca săgeţile Lui să meargă repede şi departe.
Lasă-ţi îndoirea în mâna arcaşului să fie pentru bucurie;
Căci chiar dacă El iubeşte săgeata care zboară, El iubeşte de asemenea şi arcul care este stabil.
