The Black Tulip

In Afganistan, in the Black Tulip1,
With a glass of vodka, we silently fly over the land.
Across the border, the sorrowful bird carries
Our guys home, to Russian summer lightnings.
In the black tulip, the guys who were on a mission
Fly to dear motherland for rest in peace.
Being torn to shreds, they have gone forever,
They can never hug warm shoulders.
When our tulip was falling down at an angle to the oases of Jellalabad,
We all damned our job.
Again one guy died and failed his company.
In Shindad, Kandagar, and Bagram,
We will again put a heavy stone on our souls,
We will again carry the heroes to motherland
They are 20 years old heroes for which people dig graves,
They are 20 years old heroes for which people dig graves.
But we must climb and find the strength,
If we make an error, we can be shot down here,
The mountains shoot us, a "Stinger" missile takes off,
If the enemy shoots down us, the guys will die a second time.
We fly here differently than in our motherland,
Where there is no war, and everything is familiar for a long time,

Where pilots see bodies of dead soldiers only once a year,
Where nobody shoots down helicopters from the clouds,
And we fly, clenched teeth from the anger,
Wetting our lips with vodka.
Many caravans go here from Pakistan,
It means that there is a job for the tulip,
Yes, there is a job for the tulip.

In Afganistan, in the black tulip,
With a glass of vodka, we silently fly over the land.
Across the border, the sorrowful bird carries
Our brothers home, to Russian summer lightnings.

  • 1. "Black Tulip" is unofficial name of An-12 Cub aircrafts that transported the bodies of dead Soviet soldiers from Afghanistan to the USSR during the Afghan war.

Very good link. Thanks. As we all know it is one thing to feel empathy, sympathy and quite another to go thru pain yourself. Both versions are excellent heartfelt translations for which I am greatful. The original is a masterpiece. I feel this way about Dylan's masters of war.

Dude, the problem I have with the other translation is that they are keeping to call black tulip a “body bag”, like they even had those in 1980-s in Soviet Army:

Quote:

5. There is a common terminology amongst soldiers that they are the dead in body bags.
There is a slang meaning and distinguished meaning for the war dead.
A flight back home would be a 'black tulip flight', but it is not an aircraft nomenclature or given name. A 'flight' designates the purpose of a mission.
When the cargo aircraft off-loads then it will pick up a supply flight 'beans, bullets, and bandages'. That flight would be resupply/destination.
Flight destignators do not reflect aircraft type, configuration, name, or nomenclature.

—> A flight back home would be a 'black tulip flight' —> ??? This not the one only line misinterpreted in the #2 translation

And the reason I am ranting here is because Wwww is known as a mod who deletes all comments from their translations if they don’t like them

Quote:

The memorial seen in the video is "The Black Tulip", in Ekaterinburg (Yekkaterinburg).
The black granite slabs are shaped as tulip petals.

All comments were deleted by WwW and the translation was closed for comments, this is why I posted this one comment on this site.

Try to read his version again. It looks revised and very similar to this one. Don't get carried away by a footnote usually copied from some place.
Both versions I believe misunderstand
I'd prefer someone else to confirm, but think it means when airplane turns in preparation for landing.

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Mon, 26/11/2018 - 02:08

D, they hit the plane...and the plane with bodies of fallen soldiers is going down
They are not prepared for landing

BlackSea4everBlackSea4ever    Mon, 26/11/2018 - 13:58

M, it is a valid point that boys will die twice because plane was hit. I chose to think if they get hit - luxury of empathy from the couch... Thanks

We just got tired to argue with WwWw about "Black Tulip", 'cause they think in Russian it also means "body bag" and delete all comments
