Russia is waging a disgraceful war on Ukraine. Stand With Ukraine!

(Misto Mariyi) (English translation)

The city of Mary

Versions: #1#2#3
The sun has risen over the Azov1
The wind is blowing over the dunes
It's cold, but the sand smells of spring
The eyes are already used to fatigue
There are too many reasons
I'm dreaming of how good it will be again with you

No, even ship guns
Will not not shatter my dream
My heart will never betray its faith
The righteous city of Mary2
Will stand forever
As long as the sun rises
Over the proud Azov

The sky is thundering over Azov
The enemy is firing from artillery guns
In the evening, even the concrete smells of war
To think about what tomorrow will be like
There's no time and no reason for that
Heart and hands have long got used to fighting

Even ship guns
Will not not shatter my dream
My heart will never betray its faith
The righteous city of Mary
Will stand forever
As long as the sun rises
Over the proud Azov

We have remained ourselves
We wrapped ourselves in the night
And clenched our free lips in pain
But even into the deepest vaults
The light will return again
The cry of a new day breaks free

Even ship guns
Will not not shatter my dream
My heart will never betray its faith
The righteous city of Mary
Will stand fo ever
As long as the sun rises
Over the proud Azov...
As long as the sun rises over the free Azov,
As long as the sun rises over our Azov...

  • 1. Mariupol is situated on the shores of the Sea of Azov. The sea takes its name from the city of Azov (in Russia). Mariupol is also home to the Azov steel works where the defenders of the city, among them the Azov batallion, have entrenched themselves. Which is a lot of Azovs for one footnote...
  • 2. Mariupol means "City of Mary".

Azov is, first and foremost, the name of the sea Mariupol is located on the shore of.

Hm, NOW I think you're perfectly right that it's also (and above all) the Sea of Azov. Makes more sense because of the the wind over the dunes, and the sand smelling of spring... Sorry for being so extraordinarily dense ;-)

Yep, I know, of course. But that would be Azovs'ke (more). If you say "over Azov" in Ukrainian (or Russian), I think it rather refers to the steelworks. It could, of course, also refer to the city of Azov (after which the sea is named), but that being in Russia, I doubt that that is the meaning. Well, anyway, I've added the reference to the Sea of Azov and the city in the footnotes.

From my long lasting memory, Azov sea was like a dead sea. No springs, still water, smell around everywhere

And still the occupants want to make a resort city there.

Hm, I've been to Taganrog (a long time ago). I don't remember any bad smell :-) But then I didn't go bathing in the sea, the trip was more for seeing the house where Chekhov was born...

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Fri, 22/04/2022 - 20:48

I've been in the house Chaikovskiy was born. Nothing special, same old....

Christian ScharlauChristian Scharlau    Fri, 22/04/2022 - 20:57

Well, the house in Taganrog is quite small, surrounded by a little garden. The family wasn't really wealthy. Well, in fact, Anton Pavlych started writing humoresques because he had to earn money to pay for his medical studies...

Pavlovich (Палыч, если вам так будет угодно) was a funny guy living on a prayer
As always, he had a harsh life. Though in Soviet times he became very popular
IMHO it is because there's no politics in his dramas 🥰

There is 2 more lines at the end:
As long as the sun rises over the free Azov
As long as the sun rises over our Azov
