The Cotton Handkerchief

"My love, I'm going... (*👨)
...on the train heading east"
"In the dazzling city, I'll buy you a gift"
"I'll look for something for you"
"No, love " (*👩)
"I don't need anything else...
...as long as the bright light of the city...
...won't taint you, and you'll come back to me"
"Don't let them taint you, please come back soon"

"My love, half a year has passed" (*👨)
"I can't see you yet, but please don't cry"
"I'll send you a ring that's in trend in the city now"
"It will surely look good on you"
"No, I don't even need the diamond forged from the star... (*👩)
...nor the pearl from the deepest sea"
"Compared to your kiss, I can surely say...
...their shines mean nothing to me"
"Their shines ain't nothing to me"

"My love, do you still go around without makeup?" (*👨)
"Not even wearing lipstick?"
"You might not recognize me in a suit"
"Look at the photo I sent you"
"But it's the sight of you lied down on the grass... (*👩)
...that I like"
"In the season where the cold wind blows among the city skyline,
...please take care of yourself "
"Take a good care of yourself "

"My love, I'm starting to forget you" (*👨)
"Forgive me for having a change of heart"
"Spending time in downtown area each day is simply too fun"
"I am... I am not going back"
"Dear, allow me to selfishly... (*👩)
...asking you for one last gift"
"To wipe my tears,
...please send me a cotton handkerchief"
"Just a handkerchief"

Ota Hiromi (born: January 20, 1955) was one of the top idols from 1970s. She was also a songwriter and composer. Even since she was 8, the time she learnt piano for the first time, she has already composed her first music. Ota Hiromi participated in an idol talent show in 1973, and made her debut in 1974. Her music style is a fusion between idol songs and folk songs, it turned into her own unique characteristic.  Her highest song position in Oricon chart is 2 songs that reached #2 on the chart (one of the song reached #2, because the one that reached #1 at that time was Yamaguchi Momoe's (<-- most popular idol of 1970's, the idol "queen" of '70s) most popular song).  In her entire career, Ota Hiromi has performed 5 times in Kohaku Uta Gassen (a legendary new year eve TV show that has been aired every single year since 1953 until now. To be invited to this show is a prestige, since only most popular singers of that year will be invited) from 1976 - 1980.

A music program made a survey of "Top 50 Idols of All TIme" in 2011, Ota Hiromi was placed on #38 with a total of 4,560,000 sales.

This song is Ota Hiromi's biggest hit and also her signature song. Released in 1975, it reached #2 in Oricon chart.

that's the song that inspired the lyrics of Hiromi Ota's song. It's almost the same script

"The entire lyrics are conversations between the man and the woman"

Yes, you're exactly correct :) ,

This song is, I think Hiromi Ota's best song.

But to be honest, I don't like this sad story ending.

The man is betraying the innocent girl waiting him to come back. The man is so selfish.

He flirts with other girl in the city.

Yes, but it can happen in real life. People from the village go to work in the big city. They get "culture shock" by the bright city, suddenly they have lost interest in things from their village, includes their own lovers. Long distance relationship is very fragile and risky too, they'll lose their feeling really fast. It's a sad reality.  :(
