No, I haven't forgotten anything

I would've never thought we'd meet again
Chance is strange, it causes things
And fate that's always in a hurry, a moment takes a pause
No, I haven't forgotten anything.

I smile despite myself, just by looking at you.
If the months, the years often leave their mark on beings,
You, you haven't changed at all, only your hairstyle maybe.
No, I haven't forgotten anything.

Married? Me? Come on, I have no such desire
I love my freedom, and then, between you and me
I haven't met the woman of my life
But let's go for a drink, and let's talk about you.

What have you been up to? Are you rich and content?
You live alone in Paris? And that marriage...
Between us, your parents must've died of fury.
No, I haven't forgotten anything.

Who could've told me that one day, with no interference,
Fate would bring us suddenly face to face?
I thought everything dies along with the time that passes
No, I haven't forgotten anything.

I don't really know what to say, nor where to start
Memories abound, invade my mind
My past is coming back from the bottom of its defeat
No, I haven't forgotten anything.

At the age when I was wearing my heart on my sleeve,
Your father, having different ambitions for you,
Broke our love, made our tears gush out
For a groom chosen by his standards.

I wanted to see you again but you were cloistered
I wrote to you hundreds of times, but always to no reply
It took me long before I gave up
No, I haven't forgotten anything.

Time flies and the cafe is soon closing
Come, I'll walk you through the dead streets
Like in the times of kisses stolen in your doorway
No, I haven't forgotten anything.

Every season was our love season
And we were not afraid of winter, nor of autumn
It's always spring when we reminisce our twenties
No, I haven't forgotten anything.

It was good to feel again your presence
I feel differently, a bit lighter
One often needs a dive into adolescence
It's gentle coming back to the sources of the past

I would want, if you do too, without feeling forced,
To see you again, well, if it's possible.
If you feel like it and you're available
If you haven't forgotten anything
Like me, who hasn't forgotten anything.

Bonjour!

J'ai vu que le titre dit "No, I haven't forgotten a thing" comme traduction pour "Non, je n'ai rien oublié".

Je pensais une traduction plus précise serait "No, I haven't forgotten anything". Ça sonne un peu mieux, mais c'est à toi.

George.

Salut :)

"I haven't forgotten anything" serait tout à fait correct mais un peu simpliste comme expression. "I haven't forgotten a thing" est un peu plus idiomatique, plus poétique et plus approprié pour la nuance du titre dans le contexte de la chanson, je trouve :)

I absolutely agree with g7290, sorry Alex ! "anything" would be the right translation, as in German it would be " nein, ich habe NICHTS vergessen" nichts= nothing or anything. You would not say "Ich habe nicht ein Ding vergessen", sondern " ich habe nichts" or if you want to express it even stronger " ich habe GAR NICHTS vergessen", which means it includes EVERY memory... "rien" does not mean "a thing" but "nothing" or "something".... Anyway, I would prefer (very slightly) "anything" or even " I have forgotten nothing (at all)...the word "rien" feels to me like...an absolute thing, an end, period. But those are semantics, we all know what the lyrics mean and want to express. One day it might even be different than on another day what you prefer, depending on your mood, given the song....all in all an excellent translation. One can always change a word or two. Beauty (as being correct) is in the eye of the beholder I guess..:):) Aloha, greetings ,cordialement and beste Gruesse from Maui, Hawaii!

All right, all right :) I've corrected it throughout the text.
Coming back to it now, "anything" does sound better and more accurate for me, too.

@ alx.rock

Thank you! As I said, it may be semantics but it sounds better to me as well....
Anyway, the song is just not a song, it's almost a poem and there is always such a thing as poetic license, right???

Je dis rien plus - c'est à toi.

Though the translation is excellent, I would have chosen a different word here or there. But thank you so much anyway!!

sintflutsintflut    Thu, 04/05/2017 - 19:32

slight typo , second verse, first line: "rien qu'a te regarder" not "rein...", rein means "kidney"...:):)

sintflutsintflut    Thu, 04/05/2017 - 19:44

And in the same line, shouldn't it be " I smile despite myself just (by) looking at you"??? just checking.

You're right, i've changed that. For the french lyrics though there's nothing i can do to correct the typos since i'm not the one who posted the lyrics.

,,,and "bien" instead of "bein" later on...
