On the Road

I go out, and am all alone on the road
Through the fog glitters the flinty path
A silent night, the desert harks to God
Only the stars are talking to each other
In the sky, solemn and wondrous
The earth is sleeping in a blaze of blue
Why do I only feel so sick and wondrous
What do I look forward to, what do I regret
I do not expect anything from life
And I do not regret my past at all
I'm looking for freedom and peace
I would like to relax and go to sleep
But it I do not sleep in the cold grave (1)
And thus I wish I could sleep forevermore
That I'd take the life force into my chest (1)
That my soul would lift my chest softly
That all night, and all day, my ears would cherish
When of love my sweet voice sang
It is necessary to me, that, ever greening,
The dark oak will sway and make a sound
His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all
who play stringed instruments and pipes. (Genesis 4:21)
