Why Are You leaving?

The sun is shining by my window today
An the heart
Is going sad watching the town
Why are you leaving

As every night I woke up
Thinking of you
And on my clock I watched every hours
Why are you leaving

Every promess of my love will go with you
You'll forget me
You'll forget me

By the (train) station I will be crying like a kid
Why are you leaving
Why are you leaving
Why are you leaving
Why are you leaving

Beneath the gloom of a light lantern
They are going to sleep
Everythings which stood to say
They are going to sleep

By the handles of a clock
They will wait
Every hours which stood to live
They will wait

Every promess of my love will go with you
You'll forget me
You'll forget me

By the (train) station I will be crying like a kid
Why are you leaving
Why are you leaving
Why are you leaving
Why are you leaving

Every promess of my love will go with you
You'll forget me
You'll forget me

By the (train) station I will be crying like a kid
Why are you leaving
Why are you leaving (bis)

This is an awful translation of "Porque Te Vas." First, it completely got the name of the song wrong and therefor changed the meaning completely: It's "porque" not "por que." There is a HUGE difference. And the lyrics seem more like they were translated word for word without consideration of context and no interpretation.

Mi Abuelita's translation:

The sun shines through my window right now
And my heart feels sad as I look at the city
Because you are leaving

Like all the other nights, I woke up thinking of you
And the hours pass on
Because you are leaving

All the promises of my love will be gone with you
You will forget me, you will forget me
Next to the station I will cry like a child
Because you are leaving, because you are leaving

Under the light of the streetlamp they will sleep
All the things left unsaid, they will sleep
Next to the hands of the clock they will wait
All the hours left to live, they will wait

lol! it is not a bad translation and you see it as you like. I do not judge yours because I think it is ok or not. But as she asked a question I think IT IS NOT a mistake ;) Thank you for your comment!

@mondelacruz - I agree the translation isn't very good, and I happen to be a big fan of this singer, so it erks me seeing it translated without real consideration into the way it's translated, machine-like translations vs. native/fluent translations can't even be compared, it's obvious.

However, if you feel you could have translated this better, submit your own. If you think the translation has mistakes, point them out, and help this translator improve. I'd like to see your translation though, because it sounds better and this way, yours will be up there for others to see.

I'm not sure why the person a couple of comments above me has rated this with 5 stars, the person doesn't even have Spanish as their native/fluent/studied language, and didn't bother looking at the mistakes in the translation. So I'm rating this 3 stars, because it's not completely horribly (the effort counts), and it needs improvement.

And just to make a point, I'm going to point out only three (there are many) parts the translations need improvement:

SPANISH:
Hoy en mi ventana brilla el sol
y el corazón
se pone triste contemplando la ciudad
porqué te vas

ENGLISH:
Today the sun shines through my window
And my heart saddens, watching the city
Because you're leaving

SPANISH:
Junto a la estación yo lloraré igual que un niño

ENGLISH:
By the station*, I'll cry like a child

You can add 'Standing' in [] if you'd like, and * doesn't necessarily mean train station, it could be the bus station or something similar.

por qué te vas > porque te vas = You didn't change it, that space in there makes the difference between 'why' and 'because'.

Remember that just because the lyrics in Spanish are cut off (the sentences are not connected in the same line), putting them together makes the difference in your translation. Example:

Hoy en mi ventana brilla el sol
y el corazón
se pone triste contemplando la ciudad

Should be:
Hoy en mi ventana brilla el sol
y el corazón se pone triste contemplando la ciudad

Well I did not use any machine at the time (except now to do the quote) Ok I am not native english but I think it is quite understandable and if you are not happy with it then nobody told you to not improve it or do a new one (I agree with you on that point) or just get on with the one I did some months ago! ;)

I didn't say you used a machine to translate it, I was using something like GT versus a real person who knows the language has no comparison, because the obvious better translation will always be from a person.

Nada mas te digo, no quise que te sintieras como si te insulte. Entiendo que a lo mejor el Ingles no es el lenguaje que usas mas o sabes como usarlo para traducir del Español al Ingles. Por eso es que te deje ejemplos, mis razones por darte 3 estrellas y que deseo que mejores. Si necesitas ayuda, nada mas pregúntame (si quieres, es tu decisión).

Please Carnivorous, take the accent off "porque" in the first stanza, or separate the words, as they are in the original, to show the error.

I found lyrics where it's 'porque te vas' and not 'por qué te vas'. She's singing it saying 'because you're leaving', or is that part of the song asking why he's leaving or because he's leaving (different from the actual title)?

Hi, lamb, i did the trhanslation for the alejandro fernandez cover, and i think that it is "porque" (because), but in the song context you can use both and its ok, i guess :D

I think it's porque (because) and not the other, so I kept it so. I'm not sure the lyrics submitted are accurate, but I can always leave a note in my translation to change between those two words "because" and "why".

@roster_31; If you mean to change the accent in the original spanish one, I can't because I didn't submit those.

In my opinion, it's "porque te vas". If it is a question, it should have question marks, otherwise, is wrong.

bidxaa'bidxaa'

And that's what I'm saying, that it's "porque te vas", not the question "¿por qué te vas?" throughout the song, or the title. MissValentine translated it "why are you leaving?" when there's clearly no question mark in either the title or the rest of the song. There isn't even one on the title: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porque_te_vas

Yorsh KosherYorsh Kosher    Tue, 05/11/2013 - 17:35

Well, the only culprit in here is Spanish itself :P Why is so damn confusing? :P

Here are the correct lyrics, taken from the web. And Jeanette says "porque te vas", very matter of fact, no inflection of questioning.

Hoy en mi ventana brilla el sol
Y el corazon
Se pone triste
Contemplando la ciudad
Porque te vas

Como cada noche desperte
Pensando en ti
Y en mi reloj todas las horas vi pasar
Porque te vas

Todas las promesas de mi amor
Se iran contigo
Me olvidaras me olividaras
Junto a la estacion hoy
Ilorare igual que un nino

Porque te vas
Porque te vas
Porque te vas
Porque te vas
Porque te vas

I am Spanish native and I can say the right translation is "Because you are leaving". The speaker is giving the cause of her sadness: "I will cry like a child because you are leaving".
And yet...
Listening to the song again, the above is the "right" rational answer.
But Spanish is such a poetic emotional language, that given the sad intonation Jeanette sings the song with, the emotional tendency is to say that she doesn't know why he is leaving.
So, although I would translate it as "because you are leaving", I would say "why are you leaving" is not wrong.

This is a pretty old discussion. I submitted my own translation afterward. But I disagree with the "because" and "why" being the same. It's like saying "two" and "too" are the same, they're not.

malvarcomalvarco    Thu, 01/09/2016 - 20:15

They are not the same, but that is the basis for the puns.
What about:
"Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this son of York" (Son/sun)
So they are totally valid in art where there is no just one right answer.
