Vitti 'na crozza

Vitti 'na crozza supra a 'nu cantuni
e cu sta crozza mi misi a parlari.
Idda m’arrispunniu cun gran duluri:
iu morsi senza ‘n toccu di campani.

Prestu passaru tutti li me anni,
passaru e si nni jeru, un sacciu unni;
ora ca so’ arrivati l’uttant’anni
chiamu la crozza e nuddu m’arrispunni.

Chi n’ajo a fari chiù di la me vita?
Non sugnu bonu chiù pi travagghiari.
Sta vita è fatta tutta di duluri
e d’accussì non pozzu chiù campari.

Cunzatimi cu’ ciuri lu me lettu
picchì alla fini già sugnu arriduttu.
Vinni lu tempu di lu me rizzettu,
lassu stu beddu mundu e lassu tuttu.

Translation

I saw a skull

I saw a skull on a stone block
and with this skull I started talking.
He replied with a great sorrow:
I died without a single toll of bell.1

All my years passed very soon,
they passed and went away, I don’t know where;
now that I’ve reached the age of eighty,
I call the skull and nobody responds.

What shall I do of my life, now?
I’m not able to work anymore.
This life is all made of pain
and in this way I can’t live anymore.

Prepare with flowers my bed2
since I’ve reached the end of my life.
Time has come for my rest,
I leave this nice world and leave everything.

  • 1. In other times, apparently there was the strange custom of not burying the bodies that couldn’t be recomposed within a coffin, as it can happen in the case of explosions in the mines, but to leave them dismembered and unburied.
  • 2. A coffin. The old man asks that his body won't remain unburied and abandoned.

Eh sì, alla fine mi sono deciso. Grazie per le stelline ma ancora di più per tutto l'aiuto che mi hai dato.
