Cranes

It sometimes seems to me, that the soldiers
Who didn't return from the bloody battlefields,
Did not lay down into our earth long ago,
But turned into white cranes.

From those distant times, they until now
Still fly and send their calls to us.
Isn't that why so often and so sorrowfully
We become silent when looking at the sky?

Across the sky flies, flies the tired formation,
Flies in the fog at the end of the day.
And in that array, there is a small gap —
Maybe that is the place for me.

The day will come, when with the flock of cranes
I'll also float in such a bluish-grey haze.
Calling from beneath the sky as a bird
All you, who I left behind on the earth.

It sometimes seems to me, that the soldiers
Who didn't return from the bloody battlefields,
Did not lay down into our earth long ago,
But turned into white cranes.
